We finally arrive in Oklahoma after a long, somewhat frustrating trip (see general discussions).

First problem: I have oil spraying from the back of my truck as I drive. I know it is a leak of some sort and it is blowing out the back. After looking under the hood, I see quite a bit of oil puddled on the intake behind the carb. I've read about this before, but I can't remember the solution.

Second problem: Oil pressure is not constant. At one point early this morning driving 80 mph down I35 my pressure suddenly dropped to "0". I pulled off and checked the oil. It showed oil on the dipstick, but I added 2 quarts to see if that would help. It did, but it caused another problem - a ticking sound. It's probably a lifter, I hope but I don't know if the pressure problem is related to problem 1 or a separate problem. Please advise.

Problem 3: I now have a 207 transfer case in leiu of the 229. I guess it's full time 4wd with a lever for Hi/Low. It currently has regular tranny fluid in it. Is it supposed to have tranny fluid or gear oil? Which way does the lever go for low? It points down now - does it move forward for low or backward?

Guys (and gals - it's an all encompassing word since I'm from Oklahoma originally) thanks for your help. Time is not on my side since it took us more than 4 days to make a 28 hour trip.

Thanks again.

Greg

I had a similar problem a while back on a trip pulling a trailer. My 88 GW lost about 5qts. in about 35 miles, one time. Sprayed it all out the back all over my trailer. Went back to a slow leak after that.

The puddle on the intake could be the fan blowing back from where it's really leaking. I got underneath and looked and could see a "trail" of oil and it's path. It was leaking from low on the front of the engine, on the right side. I strongly suspect the timing cover as the oil pump gasket and oil filter looked okay, but I had a lot of oil around different places on the front cover. I had oil pooling on the intake manifold, mostly on the front though, but it did not make sense to be there, unless it was blown back by the fan. I am currently (just about finished) replacing gaskets and seals, and installing intake/carb.

The only unusual thing about when I lost the big oil dump, was I had just put in two quarts of 20W-50, and my pressure went up about 5-10 lbs more, 60 to 70 lbs vs the 55 I usually run.

An easy thing to check also would be the PCV valve/hose/opening in the intake. They get gunked up sometimes and I have read in this forum, it will sometimes cause oil squirting out somewhere else. Good Luck.

A gunked-up PCV tube can cause oil to come back through the breather; is there oil in your air-cleaner?

If you overfill the crankcase, the rotating parts can whip the oil into a froth, causing the oil to become aerated. Aerated oil is compressible, so hydraulic lifters won't lift as far as they normally would, causing the ticking you describe. Aerated oil also doesn't lubricate as well, which could lead to bearing trouble, so bring that back down to five quarts.

The NP207 is an early XJ part-time transfer case (I've got one in my '84 Cherokee); the four positions, from down to up, are:

2wd
4hi (lock)
neutral
4lo (lock)

It is not a full-time case, so don't put it in 4wd on the street.

I agree with BobBarry

I know when I have over filled my oil I can see the drop in oil press.
Heck, even slowing down from 80 to 70 somtimes makes the oil press come back up.

Just my .02
