Hope these questions are not too stupid. I am looking into doing the TFI upgrade (Mild Performance Upgrade) and had some questions.

Info I have seen say to get: A distributor cap base from a 1984 Ford F-350 truck with a 460 CID engine with ECC (Electronic Compustion Control)..

Must the distributor cap base come from a 1984 truck only; no other years will work? It seems like it would be kind of hard to find such a specific year of Ford truck at the junk yard..?

Also how do you tell if the distributor cap base has ECC? Is saying you have ECC only important so as to get the TFI (Thick Film Integrated) ignition coil when buying the new coil at the parts store? Are there non ECC distributor cap bases for 1984 Ford trucks?

Thanks Jim

Can't help with specific Jim but these sites should help you along the TFI path.

The cap base is only about 8-12$.Only thing you
need from the junkyard is a bracket and the plug
connection.Got mine out of an LTD.I recently did
this upgrade and am well pleased.Very impressed with the quick starts and low end zip.ECC in the
upgrade phases is pretty much the use of the TFI
coil.If you go with the TFI coil, you will need
plug wires for the ECC application, because it will
have the proper coil wire(TFI coil has same wire
nipple as the cap.

Yup I bought the cap, rotor, adapter and wires at the store. Then I got the control module and distributer out of a 88 wago. And last I got the tfi coil off a 87 merkur 4r4ti wich had a very ez to mount tfi bracket. Um some little things your tach signal is the coils ground. Basically tfi rules. My truck ran much better.
