Finally got my new jeep home, ran like crap all the way... Looking it over a few minutes ago, I spotted a line coming from the top of the carb. It is on the top, just beneath the air cleaner, and is directly in the front middle, if you were looking at it from the front of the Jeep. Abt 6-8 inches from where it goes into the carb, there is a electrical thingy with wires to it. Then another 6-8 inches it goes to nothing and is open. The end is cracked and frayed, so I figure it goes to something, and if it is a vacuum line, then that may be one of the causes that it runs like a turtle. Can anyone help me with this?

Sounds like the bowl vent line. Should go to the charcoal canister. Shouldn't affect the way it runs.

It goes to the large nipple on the right side(as we look at the engine from the front) of the charcoal canister. The fuel vapors on the top of the carb bowl go to the canister to get reburned later. The electrical sollinoid (if I spelled that right) disconnects this process when needed.

Before I replaced the stock carb with the new Edelbrock I disconnected the whole thing and plugged both ends with no noticable differences.

Yeah, I bought some vacuum line, and fixed the leak, with no noticable difference. Replaced filter, no noticable difference, then I found that the air cleaner wasn't plugged into the vacuum lines, so the vent thingy wasn't opening up. Fixed that and it got a little better. I have plugs, wires, etc ready to go on, so hopefully that will be it.

That's the nipple that goes to the charcoal cannister. I just hooked up my cannister two days ago. While it improved slightly the performance of the V8, i.e. it felt like it automatically added vacuum where before I thought I had a slight vacuum leak.
All else being said, however, if my state didn't require it I'd leave it unhooked. I don't think it would explain your engine's sluggishness.
