I have an old sears brand tach/points meter. which has two alligator clips, however I don't knwo how to use than dang thang, does any one?

if you have 2 alligator clip... one to battery + and the other to the point distributor terminal on the coil, i guess you have a switch for point / tach

this is how mine work... but i had a 3 clip for the battery ground

Yeah, I have one as well. Don't remember the right hook up right now.

mine works with the - battery terminal and the other connection to the + side of the coil

I've got an old Sun unit, and don't know how to hook it up yet. I was figuring on the battery and coil connection.

If I told the twenty-somethings I had a tool for checking dwell, they would look at me like I had three heads. My old Sears dwell/tach has three alligator leads. The big red and black ones go on the battery. The small green one clips to the coil terminal that connects to the dizzy.

Ryan, any parts store still sells dwell/tachs. I just bought a new one a few months ago at Napa. In reference to carrotmans post you may want to ask one of the older counter persons for a dwell/tach. The ex-Burger King Asst managers there will prolly just give you that deer-in-the headlights look. ;)
