View Full Version : ignorant brake bleeding question
Ok - just replaced the wheel cylinders/shoes and I need to bleed the brakes. Can't remember if I need to have the engine running since they are power brakes or not. Oh yeah, and what can you tell me about that proportioning valve thing.
Thanks.

Just start with the pass rear, then Drivers Rear, Pass Front, Drivers Front, that will blead the system.

What I do when I'm bleeding brakes alone is to cut a piece of 2X4 to fit between the seat cushion and the brake pedal with the seat all the way back. Move the driver's seat all the way back, set the board between the front part of the seat cushion and jam the seat forward pressing the brake pedal with the board. Then open the bleeder (the seat cushion will push the board and the pedal forward), when it slows, tighten the bleeder up and repeat the process til I'm done.

get a jar w/fluid and some tubing to fit the bleeder valve- they make kits for this at autozone or whatever- and pump away. Just make VERY sure you don't let the reservoir run dry!

I have Russell brake bleeders on my GW. You open them up step on the break it pushes air and fluid out, let off pedal they have one way valve that closes them. Cost $10 a pair, got them at Summit Racing. Takes longer to add more brake fluid than it takes to bleed them.
