I have 91 GW. Yesterday I tightening my 4 “steering wobble” bolts and changed the key switch following Chris Enos' tech article. All went OK and looonnnng except when I was reassembling the upper column housing a dark colored semi u spring about 1" long with both ends bent back came flying out of the drivers side somewhere around where the steering lock device is. Can't seem to find out where it came from. Does anyone have any idea where the spring goes?

sounds to me like it is one of those pieces meant to be left over after you finish a job

I am considering adding the spring to my spare parts collection, everything seems to work OK. It just bothers me that it came from near the steering lock mechinism and I have visions of the steering wheel locking up at around 60 mph!!!

Wish I would have had this yesterday when I was doing the job. This is a site with a proceedure for repairing GM tilt steering problems. Having performed this proceedure yesterday I can tell you his procedure is very acurate, down to the plastic piece falling out in step 11. I think he may be talking about my spring in step 18.

Another good site with lots of pictures
