Mattew, if I were you I would invest in a 750cfm carb. I recently went and bought the 1405 and while it will get up and go alright I am disappointed in it. As soon as I strike it rich I will invest in some new jets for it. There is an article in the new Peterson's 4 wheeldrive where they do a dyno tune-up on one of the editor's 79 cherokee and they went thru and rejetted his 600 cfm edelbrock. It just doesn't give our big ole motors enough go-go juice. Well, that's what I think anyway.

I would go with a Holley. My Edelbrock gets too hot because of the placement of the fuel bowl. I bought a spacer, and that helped.

Actually, you'd be better off with a 1400 if you intend to keep your EGR valve. The #3731 manifold is EGR capable.
As for carb size, 600 cfm is far more than a 360 will need unless you run at 7000 rpm on a regular basis. If you have problems with it, particularly at altitude, re-jetting is the key to finding the right tune, not more cfm. I'd advise you to get a book on Carter Carbs (the Performer carbs are AFB clones).

I agree with Ralph. I have a Carter AFB 625 and an aftermarket cam and that is more than enough fuel. I would buy the step up spring kit for the metering rods. And ball ends to connect the OE cable to the carb. You will notice a bigggggg difference at highway speeds having much more power. Get the one with a manual choke if you can.

sorry guys, my vote is for what i got: holley 2bbl efi. used from ebay: 442 for basic kit, 122 for auto mixture control, 125 for used edelbrock 4bbl manifold. get in, turn the key, go go go. ok, so its a lot of cash. but once its dialed in you just drive. i love it!

You know SpruceMoose I was hpoing nobody replied about efi, because thats really what I want, and untill I put the new carb on I still might, or should I say, really want to get EFI.

yeah, i know what you mean. but from an economic standpoint, think of all the time (=money) you would save by shipping over all the posts about stalling when cold, stalling when hot, poor idle, high altitude, vapor lock, etc. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif thats once you get the efi dialed in properly.
i would never go back. now i need a "fuel injection" emblem for the tailgate!
good luck, and happy shopping!

750cfm is NOT too much carb. You just have to set it up right once you get it. My 318 uses a 800 cfm Thermoquad and i ran my wagoneer with a 795 cfm Q jet for a few months. I was not not not dissapointed with the big carbs.
Either carb you get be sure to get a 1 inch phelonic (plastic spacer fir it).
I think summit still sells a cable adaptor to hook up the 727 tranny to the 4bbl conversion.

They said in Petersen's that the 1406 used in the test had a flat spot from primary's to secondary's. This was there main reason for wanting the 750 carb. I personally feel that the 600 is enough carb for me but the 750 can be tuned to run at the same economy as the 600 plus you have better air flow through the carb. My wife is getting the 600 on hers in a week or so and I have bought a 750 that I will be trying out on mine. I got a great deal on the carb so thats why I'm using it. If I had to chose a carb to stick with it would be the Edelbrock Thermoquad.
