Yea,baby!!! Good to be back! Now, down to bidness...
My 727 slips in and out of gear. I rev the engine a little, and it goes back in gear. The PO thought the NP 229 t-case might have something to do with it. It has a loud 'hiss' inside the Jeep - The little black vacuum pod on the firewall is cracked. Tranny fluid measures full.
Whadya think?

You may have a situation similar to one I had with my '74 Olds Toronado - a loose/broken/leaking vacuum line wouldn't allow shifts past first gear. The hissing may be associated but I'm certain others smarter and more experienced than I will come forward to offer their views.
I know the two vehicles are quite different but I thought I'd throw it out to you...

How are you guys checking your tranny fluid?
The vacuum leak sure as heck could be messing with the transfer case, but I don't think it would take it in and out of gear, only in and out of 4wd. Fix that anyway ASAP, vacuum leaks are all around bad. Wiggle the inside vacuum switch also to make sure you're not leaking there as well. Thats where I've heard the hiss when it was on the inside of my FSJ.

Not sure if the same applies to your year, but in the factory shop manual for my 89' it says an idle set too low can cause the problem (among other things).
Sure did miss this site...:::sniffle:::...
