It took a lot of work and patience to get it set up right, it made life a lot easier once I changed the power valve and the accelrator pump diaphram on my 2150.

ditto, pump gas once, turn key, it starts. And that goes for both jeeps. If I dont pump it once it will start for about 1-2 seconds then die. Then Ihave too turn it over a few times to get it started again after pumpingit once.

Definitely need your carb in perfect operating condition.
After it starts, it's things like the heat riser, heat stove pipe and choke controls that will make it run good while still cold.

i pump it twice and start it, let it high idle for 3-4 min, then tap the pedal to knock the idle off and let it run for another minute and its perfect. if i only pump it once when i press the pedal it instead of a smooth grrrrm its grgrgrgrmm
lol if you understand that

I have read in several manuals to even pump once before startup.

turn ignition on wait for electric fuel pump to change sound (filling bowl) then press acc. 1 once and she fire right off.. this is all on stock ignition system.. Edelbrock intake and 4barrel edel. carb.....
MY start worries ended with the installation of the electric pump and fresh carb......
I nkow I live in Dallas But I travel to NM to a family ranch nearly every month.. its been 20 something up there lately

What applies to one FSJ rarely applies to another. If I pump the pedal once or twice with mine, it runs for a second then dies. If I pump it one more time, it starts, runs for a second then dies, and will keep doing this. I found the magic number to be 10-12 pumps then it starts and runs on fast idle and stays running. I don't know why I have to pump it that many times but I know there is nothing wrong with the carb because it runs great, it just likes to be pumped about 10 times in the winter. Ah who knows?

Turn key, let electric choke kick in, hit pedal once, and Vrrrooomm, it's running.

Pump once, if it has been driven in the last three days, vrooom it goes. If it has sat for a week, pump it once, and feather the pedal, not pressing enough to kick off the fast idle cam, but giving enough to keep it going til the oil pressure comes up. Usually once the oil presure come up, it will idle no problem, even if it is freaking cold. Which in georgia is about 75 degrees smile.gif
Mine could use a carb rebuild, but I think I have enough BIG items on my plate to leave it be for now.

89grand: that most likely means your accelerator pump is badly worn.

My 79 J10 cranks up and runs with one pump on the pedal.
My 88 YJ is more like some kind of vodoo ritual that may or may not work, riverdance on pedal, turn key, look around to see if you have the 12volt jumpstarter in the floorboards, gut a chicken, plead with the little Jeep gods to let me go one more winter before I bite the bullet and do the Nutter Bypass, curse whoever it was who thought it was a great idea to hook a computer and a 100 feet of vac line and STUFF to a 258, fires up and runs like crap......scrap windows and runs like a scalded dog just to show it still loves me after I get about a mile down the road.

One pump on the gas, injects gas into the intake via the accelerator pump while setting the choke at the same time. Make sure your carb linkages are well lubed and working correctly.
If you have to pump a bunch of gas into the intake to start it, its likely your choke needs adjusting, or repair, or the accelerator pump is not working very well.

I don't have any other problems with the carb at all, I only have to pump it that many times after it has sat all night in the morning not at any other time and only since it has gotten colder here. At the end of the day after work it'll start right up and it's been sitting for 9 or more hours.
Well if it is a bad accelerator pump I guess it's not too big of a deal if it only makes me have to pump the gas pedal more times in the morning but other than that it runs great.

if its sitting there idling, and you hit the gas hard, does it smoothly rev up, or kind of bog for a second then speed up?
or as rande said, your choke may be set to lean.

As long as it's warmed up I can rev it up with out bogging, but you may be right that it's starting to wear out.
I have to pump my gas pedal several times and try turning it over about three times before she starts. It is like I have to get the gas from the tank up to the carb. Once it starts for the first time it will fire right up. I thought it may be something wrong with the fuel pump because it started leaking, so I put a new one on, but same thing. I'm not really sure what is going on with mine.
