Okay, I cant let this go on any longer, my temperature, oil pressure, and gas guage are all malfunctioning. The temperature registers at cold all the time, the oil pressure registers at pressures that should make my seals blow, and my gas needle registers allover the guage face!
What could be wrong? Is there a simple explanation for my malfunctioning guages?

Voltage Regulator? (dash) not engine.

But my Ammeter and speedometer works... Would it not effect them?

Alright, I just got to thinking about my gas guage. The guage started acting up just one or two days after going wheeling. I remember that I had caught my receiver hitch on a a very small decline. And just yesteday, I saw two wires hanging from my hitch. They were wires from my trailer lighting plug. One of them was smashed pretty badly and the other's connector was broken. Ive heard that the ground for the sending unit is back there. Could I have knocked it loose? It mostly registers that I have a more than full tank of gas, but occasionally, it will move normally, although registering more than I know I actually have. If I had no ground, would it register as empty or full? What do you think?

Your tank ground is more than likely the broken wire.Mine is connected on the frame rail with one from the trailer connector. And yes with the ground off the guage will read full.

Thanks Coolram!

No, the ammeter and the speedo don't have anything to do with the CVR: only the water, oil and fuel gauges are powered off that relic from the stone ages.

The thing is, they went one at a time, the Temp guage went back in late june, then the Oil pressure guage went out in july, and now, in september, the stupid gas guage goes out. Wouldnt they all go at once if it was the CVR?

I"m in a similar boat--my oil press gauge is pegged all the time, my temp gauge shoots up to redline (pegs) at startup and never budges, but the motor's not over-heating, and my gas gauge is only accurate down to 1/4 of a tank (AMHIK!). What should I look for first? This is on the new-style dash ('91 Wag).

I've got a similar problem 'cept temp, fuel and oil all read 0. They all came back on at start-up today but went right back to 0 after a bit.
I thought there was 1 ground for those gauges.?.
Where is the CVT located?

all my gauges used to work fine. then in some heavy winching situations ended up having some smoke coming out of the dash..ended up losing my oil pressure gauge, also lost my temp gauge but that came back sometime later on. thinking the smoke might of had something to do with my amp gauge but that still seems to work ok though. I was thinking of working on the gauges this winter, possibly replacing with some aftermarket ones as well as adding a tach. been to busy sorting out other more pressing problems with the jeep so havn't really given the gauges much thought.

the CVR is inside the temp guage. It is easy to check with a meter once the cluster has been removed. the CRV can be rewraped with new wire if you cannot find a decent replacement. change them dead bulbs while you have it out. smile.gif

Alright, my diesel mechanics teacher told me that they could go all at once or one at a time. When they go one at a time, the CVR is slowly getting worse. When they all go at the same time, the CVR is junk. I hope this helps some of you guys. I also did a search on the subject of guage, and found these:
IFSJA Tech Section Fuel Guage Article (http://www.ifsja.org/tech/fuel/fuelgauge.shtml)
Temp Guage (http://www.ifsja.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=009263)
Oil Pressure Guage (http://www.ifsja.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=005573)
I hope this helps the rest of you with this problem. :D
