View Full Version : Exhaust Flanges

I recently went to the local parts store to get some exhaust flanges gaskets. They don't fit. My exhaust manifold flares out at the tips, which fit right into the y-pipe. The gaskets I bought have the same flaring that the manifold has, which leaves no room for the gaskets.

Has anyone else had this problem?
How did you seal the flange joints?

Good question Jerry, I'm having the problem on my 82 Wag. Hope someone can help.

Every AMC exhaust manifold that I have encountered, used a composite "donut." However, when I replaced the exhaust on my Ramcharger, the y-pipe connected directly to the manifolds (no gasket). Don't know about your Waggie, but they may have done it 2 different ways.

There are Donut Gaskets, might have the old ones stuck in the manifold? See if they come out. I do not recall seeing the Jeep manifolds with the cast flare joint as Cliff mentioned. The Donut Gaskets fit into the manifolds then the Y pipe goes on.

The driverside manifold on my last 80J10 had the bell/flange fabricated right into the manifold. The Y pipe just bolted tight to it. Then on the passengerside there was a flat gasket between the flat serface on the manifold and the heatflapper. Then from the heat flapper to the Y pipe it got one of them there donuts. But yes the driverside manifold had the bell fabed right into it(no gasket on the driverside needed). Craig

I have run into mainfolds with the flare cast right into the manifold on a Jeep before. I think it was my wife's '86 GW. Pissed me off cause I had already bought the gaskets...

My 87 360 doesn't use to donuts, pipes bolt directly to the manifolds.

Yup Just looked at some manifolds I have laying around, no donut gaskets needed either!!!

Yeah, my exhaust does have the donughts built into the manifold. I also had already bought the gaskets.

Chalk this one up to R&D.

Chalk this one up to R&D.Save the gaskets, if you're like me you'll get another FSJ to use them on ;) Actually you'll save them, forget all about them, buy new ones for your other FSJ, and then find them afterwards :D
