View Full Version : Transmission Noises!!!
Hello out there. I'm the new kid on the block and I desperately need you help. While I'm not new to Jeeps, (this is my sixth,) this is my first FSJ. I just recently welcomed an 89 GW to my home and he has a ticking noise eminating from the transmission. It almost sounds like lifters but it is coming from the transmission and not the engine. The sound is only when the transmission is engaged. The 727 has 82K on it and has received routine maintenance from its PO as per the service records. Any ideas as to what it might be? Torque Converter? The transmission fluid is relatively fresh and it shifts fine. The ticking noise increases as RPM's increase and it appears to be coming from the transmission tunnel inside the car. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Are you 100% positive that it's not the exhaust? The only thing I can think of if it is the trans would be a cracked flex plate.

I had a ticking noise like you describe, and it was a hole in the exhaust manifold. It was kind of elusive to track down the noise, even when looking right at the hole in the manifold. As Andy D says, "go for the cheap and easy stuff first". I would look for any exhaust leaks, and plug 'em, then continue diagnosis.
Good luck!
Thanks for the heads up. My new suspicion is a leak in the heat riser. With the exception of the noise, is it anything to worry about?

This is a long-shot, but I thought I had a ticking noise in the t-case that was really coming from under the dash not the floor board. The cruise control box can some times make this soound, it is a small yellow box. Easy to check if that is your problem before tearing down the transmission.
