Put a new fuel pump on, so now that works. But the bastage still wouldn't start. I figured it was flooded so I let it sit a while. Came back out, hit the key, and BANG! Muffler pieces everywhere. And this was in a garage, so it was extremely loud!

I don't get it, the **** thing ran fine when I got it. I hate 258's, and I'm starting to hate Jeeps in general now.

But seriously....what happened after the muffler explosion, cussing, and kicking??? Did ya try to start it again????

Have you checked everything in the area where you were working on the fuel pump?? I know I am bad about unhooking something to get at a nut or bolt better and then forgetting to hook it back up.

Just a thought.....

serious backfire, I blew a hole in my muffler after I reset the timing so it wouldnt fire out of the carb. The result was that it firedd out my exhaust until I got the carb set and the timing corrected.

That backfire was the last straw. I'm going to starting ripping it apart and selling parts. I just wall ALL the junk out of my garage!

Let me guess, its Sunday and you forgot to buy beer last nite before the stores closed.......

Now calm down, just by looking at your signature I can tell you won't do something so unthinkable!!!

:D But if you do......How much for the '67 Gladiator??? :D :D :D

maybe a cat got in there and kept the exhaust from exiting, and pressure just built up and it blew.

I had the one explode while driveing. I was coasting down a hil when it went. It was a new muffler too. I took it back to the shop the installed it and they replaced it. I think the truck must have been running rich in my case. It also had a tired 360 in it.

Sounds like to me some raw fuel made it into the exhaust.

I bet that was really LOUD!

Did you have to dump any little bit of fuel down the carb to get it to start after replacing the fuel pump? Did you have to prime it in any way? Sounds like too much raw fuel.
Happened to me once with my second car, just pumping the gas too much to start it one day.

Did the same thing a month ago trying to set timing after replacing the cover. My ears are still ringing.
New muffler for a 78 Cherokee- Meineke $78.00 installed (took 25 minutes flat, even welding it in). ;)

several years ago when mom still drove the wag we blew the muffler apart on the way to school. we had been having problems with the ignition module and the stupid cap on the coil when it happened. Dad asked what was wrong with it and i told him we blew the muffler off. He didn't realize it had literally blown itself apart it the road. :D

Same thing happened to me, except I needed a manifold from Mr. G. Giant. Blew the muffler and blew the manifold into bits and the heat riser!! Basically blew the &%&$$#@!! out of everything from the head back! scared the ^%@)!! out of me it was so loud!! 8 weeks and about $700 later I'm just getting my exhaust back together!

i blew 2 of them on my 84. a weak coil was the culprit. there wasnt enough spark to completely burn the mixture. it would collect in the exhaust and a spark or the heat or something would touch it off.

Ok u guys are scaring me now...Im just gonna park my 87 gwag in the garage and never touch it again....LOL naw it would be fun to scare the crap otta me and anyone in a block radius. I figure as long as I dont see fire ill be ok, had a 75 f-250 highboy that i forgot to put the fuel line on the carb and tried to start it....use your imagination on what happened next, and no I didnt crap my pants...but close     :D tongue.gif
