Welcome to the Forum Mike. Glad to see another semi-local here. Got another guy here from Westminster. I got the same carb on a 78 Wagoneer Limited. From what I can see and hear from others, the carb is a pretty good choice. I just had my 2v Motorcraft rebuilt for wifey's GW and didn't have any problem with getting parts.

Is there anyway to find out what emissions came with it from the vin #...In maryland..if a vehicle old as mine fails, twice all i gotta do is show them a reciept for 200$ worth of work and i get a 2 year excemption..weird..l8tr

Welcome Mike!! You have found (IMHO) the best FSJ site around. Here in LALA land I avoid the Jeep dealer at all costs, unless of course my wallet needs a cleaning. Most the chain stores have rebuild kits for your carb. Hey you live in "Motor Week" town.

Mike,
Yes you need a cat.conv.for the test. All the other stuff is to be on it for maryland state inspection[egr, air tubes, air pump, single exhaust,char.canister]bummer.If you take it to the test have it warm, low on high test gas+two or three bottles of dry gas in the tank.[little alchol won't hurt]They also check the gas tank filler to see if you can put reg.leaded gas in the tank???

Outside California, the '78 did not have a catalytic converter or an evap canister, so unless MD goes against every other state, those wouldn't have to be retrofitted to your Cherokee.

My '78 Chero (also Levi's edition--cool!) ain't got diddly squat for emissions equipment, and it's bone stock.

Hey guys i was wrong about the cat.conv.+char.can.I looked in my book.I owned a 79 with an installed 401 and had all of that junk on it.I would love to have the last 401 motor a had,to put in my grand. It was a 1972 from amc sport boat.Had that in 78 cj7,boy would that fly.If i remember one thing about that carb.was i trouble with choke pull-off,it was different than most other carbs.

I've always been under the impression that you want to take low octane gas to emmissions.
You also want to lean your carb out a little before hand if you can.

Kewl, that sounds great..I have another
cherokee, same year, but 4.2 I6, 3speed,
part-time 4wd. It doesn't have anything
emmissions stuff on it either. Or a dash for that matter, or a muffler hehehe..
The guy who sold it to me for $200, told me
it was a special only made one year cherokee,
like a "jeep grand sport" or something like that?.. Were there any rare cherokee models back then?..One last inquiry(sp?)..is there any way to mount a manual to a QT case?
Thanx for all the info guys!

Apart from regional or single-dealer specials, the only one-year 4-door I know of is the '83 Pioneer, though the Chief and Laredo were two-year only options on the '81-'82 4-doors. For the 2-door WT's, there was the "Golden Hawk" decal set, which I think was only available in '79.

There ain't no way to mount a manual tranny to a QT--it just isn't happening. Something to do with the xfer clutches or something...sorry.

BTW how are the chief "s" different than a normal chief?..l8tr

It's not impossible (they've done it down in Australia; 5-spd Nissan tranny to a BWQT case.); just impractical. The only connection between the transfer case and anything else is the input shaft and adapter plate; you can modify the output of any tranny to match those, given an unlimited amount of time and money.

quote:
Hmmmm no biggie, just wondering..ho about the reverse, th400 to dana/spicer model 20?

The TH400 was paired with the D20 in the FSJ from '65 through '73 (and possibly even later). In GM's, the tranny was attached to NP203's and NP205's, plus Advanced Adapters can hook it up to just about any transfer case ever made (it's a popular option for swaps).

quote:
BTW how are the chief "s" different than a normal chief?..

No Chief "S"; the Chief was a trim level above the "S", but kept some of the same trim (such as the big "S" badges).

That refers to how many valves per cylinder your 360 had... of course, all 401's were 4v.
<JK!> (now that's a rumor to get started... http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif )
The four-barrel (4v=4 venturii, or barrels or holes) and two-barrel carbureted 360's were internally identical.
