Found one at a towing service/garage and trying to find the owner now. It is a 4 door cherokee with the plastic vertical bar grille that came on the last of the J-trucks, that would make it an 84+ model would that be correct? Did the 4 door continue after the 2 door was dropped?

If you are talking about FSJs, then the 4 door models stopped being made the same year that AMC dropped the 2 door FSJ Cherokee.

1983 to be exact. The muscle grille was used from 1981 on on both the Chero and J-truck.

So if the grill is correct, it should be an 81-83?
It has steel wheels and is painted that funky color the Feds used, if so would the VIN show it?
Would that make it Chrysler or AM General?

My 83' is made by AMC. Its a 4 door cherokee pioneer N/T. I beleive the cherokee was discontinued that year to make room for the new smaller XJ cherokee and wagoneer. They continued with the grand wagoneer as the only FSJ in the line up.

My 88 was built in July of 87 and has all the AMC stickers on it still.

If it does not have hubs, (i.e. it has 229 transfer)
then look at the front diffy if it has a vacumn
motor that would make it a 83, but a lot of the
fed ones were 208 transfer cased (Like my 88 grand
wagoneer) Or you could just read the VIN.
