My "new" 81 Cher six would not idle, so I went surfing. Came across jeeptech.com website and found an article by Terry Howe which described my problem perfectly. I followed his BBD carb disassembly and cleanout procedure strictly. It worked out just as he said--I had the clogged idle tubes big time. Total time about an hour. It now idles pretty well, and at least I can begin to check out other ignition/vacuum components that need the engine running to test. I would recommend this fix to others.

good job. a way to check this is the future is to look into the top of the carb and check if it's misting properly.

as for new things to check out........start with the "PIECE OF JUNK" ignition box. after that, try and remove computer controls/emissions junk. we've been able to get 3 seperate 258's running better, and tested cleaner at the DMV by hooking it up like a early 70's 258. of....go to the junkyard a get an HEI off of a 250 I6 Chebbie. Huge improvement!!! Good luck.

Looking for proper misting is what made me decide that his fix would help me. My module is aftermarket---someone already changed it out. I am doing cap, rotor, plugs and wires, and basic emissions overhaul (tubing and connections, PCV) before I get to mods just now. Got to have basic specs before changing too much, IMHO. I can't keep all the variables straight in my head...

Do you have any diagrams on the vac line routing and any more info on the HEI From the cheby? Thanks.

sure......

there should only be one vacuum line and 3 electric lines to the HEI. take the whole distributor. after removal take off the GM input gear. it's about 1/2 inch tall. find an AMC distributor (72 or later) and remove the input gear. it should be about 1 inch tall. shorten it to fit the sfat on the HEI, then install your new HEI distributor. I AM ONLY POSTIVIE THAT THIS WORKS FROM A CHEBBIE 250 TO AN AMC 258. I'm not sure if one from a Chebbie 350 would work with the same modifications on a 360. This is the single biggest performance/tuning mod advantage we have found for the 258...and it's cheap with a junkyard distributor.

oh yeah...the only vacuum line should be the advance...and it only goes on in 1 spot...
