It's time to do something about my tranny. I picked up a spare used T18 but the more I think about it, I'd be better off rebuilding mine than rolling the dice on another used one.

What kind of special tools are needed?

Also, any recommendations on rebuild kits? Novak has one for $159 that looks okay.

Thanks.

I dont know about a t-18, but I was in a t-19 which is close to the t-18. Special tools ? I dont know about. I rebuilt my t-5 all the way without any special tools. A good set of snap ring pliers and a couple of brass hammers are about all I needed for my t-5.

I've heard a hydrolic press is handy but can't confirm it. What all is included in that rebuild kit? What all do you need? Just bearings and seals or syncros and maybe gears too?

Dunno, haven't taken the tranny out yet. Feels like the bearings are bad, just makes alot of racket when I'm coasting over 30 mph. Noise goes away when I give it gas.

Thanks for the replys.

It's easy as long as you got a REAL GOOD set of snap ring pliers. The snapring on the input shaft is burley without them.

Just take you time and you will be fine Knock out the counter shaft first and allow it to drop out of the way to get the main and input shafts out.

Use a big hose clamp to hold the springs and balls (ball bearings) back in place when you are reassembling those parts. That is the only tricky part. Watch you eyes when taking it apart as these thing go flying.
