Hey Folks,
I have aline on a set of wagoneer axles from an '81. The guy selling them told me they were D44's front and rear... he was wrong, its a model 20
So heres my question, what are the pros and cons on the model 20 compared to the dana 44? I'm looking to put these under my MJ and was hoping for a D44HD/D60 combo but cant find any up here. So I was going to settle with D44 front and rear, but now this came up.
The guy also said that after he found out that it was a model 20 axle, that this has the tow package and said that this was the larger model 20. Did they have two different model 20's?
Thankx
Ryan

The wag 20 is 1 piece the babyjeep 20 is 2 piece. Some mods can be made to the wag 20 to make it better then a 44 Not sure what mods. I heard welding the tubes to the diff??

Now to me they looked like they were a two piece axle. They had the axle flange with a square hole in the end. Now I'm pretty sure that this means two piece, correct?
And would $500 CDN for both complete axles and steering linkages be a good deal?

Sorry man, can't give ya much info on the axles. just stuff I have read. sj 20's are decent up to about 36" tires.
I paid 200 Cdn for my 86/360/727/np228 44 frt/rear (drove it home) and 500 Cdn for my 81/258/727/208 44 frt/20rear.
But if ya need it, 5 bills is better than 6.

Regger, the two piece axle on the AMC20 rear end has a castellated nut on the end of the axle, the square hole in the flange means it is a one piece.

The model 20 in the Wagoneer is much larger than the small jeep counterpart. The axle tubes are larger, the axle bearings are larger, the spring perches are on the good side...
I used a model 20 carrier and ring and pinion from a narrow track CJ-7. The carrier and the carrier/pinion bearings were the same. As stated before, the axle bearings were not.
As far as the axles themselves are concerned, I am confused. I heard that my axles would be one piece. After I pulled them, it looked more like a 2 piece to me. It sure looks like they must be 2 pieces because you can see the splines on the axle where they attach to the flange. It does not really look like a nut on the flange. It does have a big square "hole" on the end, it could be a nut?? I dont know. The splines sure make it look 2 piece.
The ring gear on the 20 is larger than a 44. I am not an expert but if the 20 has one piece axles then it should be as stout or moreso than a 44. I think I would have rather rebuilt a 44 instead of my 20. Also, my 20 had tapered roller bearings on the axles. The only replacements I could find were straight bearings. They ride in gear oil instead of being packed (pull the seal). This was my first R&P set up and it was not too bad. I would be much easier if the whole third pulled out like a Ford, Chrysler, or even Toyota.
I would like to know about the axles too!

Thankx for the info. I took a look at it and from the other info I've been given from others I think I will try and get a D44. They are a lot more common around my parts so If by chance I need a part on the trail, chances are someone else might have it. Thankx for all the info

hey Like2wheel....I saw that same spline crap when I did my AMC 20 rear wheelbearings. It looks like they press the flange onto the splined shaft, then weld the ends and stamp a square hole. They are not really "1 piece" in my opinion
