Friend of mine has a 76 Scout with a 304/T-19/Dana TC(I think its either a Dana 20 or 300) he is parting out. I have been looking for a T-18 and TC to convert my 79 Cherokee TH400/QT to a manual transmission. Will the Scout T-19 work? Doesn't the Scout 304 have the same bolt pattern as my 360? Any thoughs or words of wisdom from the group?

No, the scout 304 is totally different than the AMC 304. Kinda like a chryo 360 to our AMC 360s. smile.gif I the pattern on the tranny side of the bellhousing may well be the same though, scotty would probably know that and should be chiming in here sometime. Other than that the tranny/t-case will work just fine as long as you can find a way to bolt it to your motor.

So no one makes an adapter to mate the Scout T-19 bellhousing to our 304/360/401 engines? Too bad! Since my Cherokee is an automatic I need to find a donor that has everything from the engine/bell housing back - including pedals. It is all there for the asking on the Scout so its a bummer that it wont work!

I believe you should be able to use a Jeep T-18 bellhousing, as long as the input shaft length is the same. As for the t-case if it came out of a scout it should be a D20, that's the only t-case I know of them using in the 70's scouts. The 1980 scouts got the texas pattern D300 but that was only one year.

sorry to say the scout tranny is not very adaptable to most jeep belhousings. it has a long inputsahft, and a very long bell, with the fork back near the rear of the bell,so you cant use the long t18 bell/sppacer
however,if you can find a bell or complete tranny from a scout with an amc 258,there may be some hope,as the amc 258 has the same pattern as the v8s. i am not sure is the v8 scout trannies use the same length input shaft as the amc 258 scouts,so i cant tell you for sure if you can bolt a 258 scout bell to your friends 304 tranny and bolt the whole thing up to your 360. in order for it to work, you may need the whole scout 258 tranny
i have also heard of people swapping out the input sahft for a shorter ford t19/t18 sahft,so that may be an option too.i have heard conflicting views on wether a t18 shaft works in a t19. but if you swapped out the input shaft, should be feasible to use a t150 bell
by far the most simple way of converting your rig would be to find a complete t18//d20 from another v8 powered FSJ and take the pedal cluster, linkage etc. it will be a complete bolt in if you find a complete donor rig to scavenge all the little parts from smile.gif

almost forgot-some scout t19s are close ratio,so id double check that the trannyin question has the granny 1st.IMO its not worth the effort to try and swap in a close ratio tranny with a 4:1 1st

Thanks Scotty, I believe I will do just that. Now if I can just explain to my wife why I need another Jeep sitting in the backyard (I just added #4 and I also have 2 Willys')!!!
