I saw a 79 chero that I could buy for 800 bucks.
It looks intact except that I noticed a bunch of what looks like silicone on the front hubs. it might be to stop some kind of oil leak. Since there are no manual locking hubs, I did not see a vacuum switch inside the cab to activate the 4 wheek drive. Is there something fishy going on here?.

1979 Cherokees came with a Quadra trac transfer case. These were full time four wheel drive, so, no need for locking hubs. There should be a dial inside the glovebox to lock the transfer case. Only for extreme situations!! Not for dry pavement!! Many came with a low range option, although some did not. You should have a small lever on the transmission hump by the drivers seat if it came with low range. Not a big deal to add a low range unit to these if you need to. It's a simple bolt on deal.

For 800 if its in good shape its a steal. Either way I'm sure that it will take some money to get it driveable and right. The Q-trac is a good setup as long as you don't go all out like RB.

I've used a tiny bead of silicone around my caps to ensure a good seal, and also to keep them from popping off. That may be what the owner did.

No switch.....hmmmmm get under it and look at it...make sure it's all intact...

There was a chero I looked at in Yuma a while back...guy said it needed a front drvieshaft....

hehehe...well... I got under there to find a 2WD TH400 and NO T-CASE!!! :D

But that's another story... look for vac lines under the dash where the glove box is... stuff may be hanging or diconnected and blocked off...

Concur with Bob.

The silicone might be to keep water out more than to keep oil in.

I found that a 4" (I think) pipe cap thingy (for pvc pipe?) fits over the end of my axle just fine. It's black rubber with a hose clamp on it to clamp down and keep water/etc. out of the axle.

Does it run ok??? If so, sounds good to me.

Just for reference, I paid 2K for my 77. It was in pretty good shape and ran well.
