I noticed that when I try to turn the steering wheel lately, the there is smooth movement, then it catches and I hear a squeak under the hood, then it moves smoothly for another inch or two, then it repeats the process. It used to only do this when I turned the wheel to the far left or right, but now it does it all the time!

I asked my lil cuz to watch under the hood as I moved my steering wheel. He told me to stop and that the pump was stopping. I told him to turn the wheel for me while I watched. Sure enough, the pully would completely stop and the belt would keep on moving, making the squeaking sound.

I checked the fluid levels, and they seem fine. I figure my pump is bad. What is going on? Does my pump really need replaced?

OK BBJ … http://www.nagca.com/forum/images/smiles/1thumbsup.gif

... Is your smog pump belt driven off of the P/S pump like mine is??
The smog can lock-up and cause the P/S pump to do like you said. Other than
that tighten the belt a little more.
