i'm in the process of re-shoeing rear brakes. the hardware looks fresh. prolly replaced with last set of shoes. i freed up the frozen star adjuster and white lubed everything. will the self-adjusters work? whilst the wheel was still in the air, i ran it in reverse and stomped on the pedal. then i watched as #2 son "drove". wheel locked but it didnt seem to have enough drag,so i tightened up another turn. do the self adjusters work or are they wishful thinking?

They are rather funky even with new hardware.. Best to just keep the adjusters working so you can adjust em every now and then. usually there is a hole in the backing plate where you can reach in with a screwdriver and turn it.. not sure if our fsj's have that hole there or not

Yes they do have the hole. Should be a rubber plug in the hole but if its like mine it was dry rotted and broke into a million pieces. Oh well just one more hole in the ole' Wag

Mine have always worked. I do believe though that their intent is to provide small amounts of adjustment to tighten up wearing brake shoes rather than to be an auto adjustment after installing new shoes. The new shoes should be manually adjusted to just contact the drum then loosened 1/4 turn or so. This should allow for proper braking and auto adjust will easily take up the slack. Otherwise if they are too loose you need to back-up 27 times around a Wal-mart parking lot tapping the brake pedal.

Ha ha ha.. Ive driven around backwards doin the ole brake adjusting maneuver (with little success) and always have a good laugh when I see someone else doin it.. I think they only work on theyre own if you kneel at the shrine of humility and recite the mantra.
I did a similar one when I first got my GW, "hm is it in 4wheel, hmm . mabye not.. hm no mabye it is.. hmmm"

thanks guys,i dont know what came over me. i only know of 1 rig where the self adjusters ever worked. i did good getting right side done. idid it after work inthe rain and dark. i'll get to the left one this w/e. drum brakes are a PITA. then ican adjust e-brake. then on to a complete exhaust sys. if any one has any tips on removing the y-pipe without shearing the studs, then justlike ross perot... im all ears. holy spirit, i had a few bugs like that. http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/biggrin.gif
