Well....this may look a bit odd right now, but I do finally have a full matching set of tires on the '78. Spartans front and rear now! smile.gif Had the rear two mounted and had put them on a few months ago. Just finally got the front two mounted, but had one change in them! smile.gif After getting the '83 J10, and seeing the black rims on that and thinking they looked pretty good, decided I'd buff down and repaint the rims I intended to mount the front Spartans on. So, this is what I did, and so tires may match, but now rims are slightly different colors! Anyway.....thought I'd post for everyone to see....and see what you all think of white vs. black rims. Otherwise they are the SAME original style Jeep rims. The black should show the dirt/rust/crustiness a fair bit less, and overall, I kinda think these look pretty darn nice dark! Will buff the other two rims down and repaint them now and have all that matching, but here's some shots of it as it is right now....see what ya's all think! smile.gif
(PS....pardon the picture quality...bad time in the afternoon shooting toward the sun with el cheapo d-cam doesn't help!)

Hmmmm.....Pink? Somehow that just doesn't fit the bill......at least not on any of MY rigs. Maybe on one of YOURS, Pete! ;) A dark gray would be worth considering, yes......but kinda like the black so far. BTW....here's the '83 with all black rims:

Yeh, needs a wee bit of body work(and tranny), but definitely better looking rims than that cruddy yellered white stuff.
Pink? Still shaking my head over that one, Pete....sheesh....if I didn't know you better, I'd be suprised to hear such a suggestion!
Take care....

I painted my chevy ralley wheels gloss black..they look nicce. Makes the tires look bigger from a distance too becausse there is the definition of the rim to the tire. When I had my spartans..one was blackk and always thought it looked best.

WillyPete's white wagon wheels are nice...especially on a dark truck like that(nice rig, WP!). Not arguing elsewise at all. But, even those wagon wheels start to look a bit lame when they turn that rusted/crusty yeller in time. VERY hard to keep stuff that clean around here! redface.gif
I guess my point about black vs. white is the idea of considering it as an option. I don't know if Jeep/AMC ever came stock with black, but I think it looks good. White is ok, especially when new/clean, but aged, they look less so. My post was mainly to show how this option looks....so if anyone else might want to consider doing so. There are plenty of good rim options out there, but this is using stock rims.....and el cheapo paint.....yeh, not a "factory" quality job, but better than crusted yeller/white......and I think it fits the rig better too, basically.....
But, yes, there are other options that are good ideas too...definitely.

I'm liking the white for WillyPete's rig and his style of wheels but for your style wheels I'd go black.

Is it just me or does the whole rig look pink in the second picture? I am nutz though, so it might just be my imagination.

paint the rims to match the truck
WillyPete

yeh, that's true bout the paint. rims on the 79 look like junk, and they're the same style/color as the J10's.

Phil, I like the look of those wheels when they match the body color.

I'm of the opinion that the only colors that look good on rims are ones that:
* Contrast with the body-color, and
* are OSHA-approved... :D

The white wagon wheels on WillyPete's are nice.....I like those wheels and even stock Jeep rims can look all right in non-crusted white form! I guess one has to take a lot of little things into factor when considering rim colors. Chrome can look nice too....definitely. I like the aluminums to some degree(yes, those goofy turbines) as they don't look as awful as the crusted white ones do. All in all, I just wanted to show how the crusted white vs. black looked on my '78 right now. And how a full set looked on the '83. I had never thought of going to black until then, but that was a nice thing to be able to consider. I like the looks now......at least better than before.
As for painting rims to match the vehicle color, I don't know if that means just to "color coordinate" or to be the SAME color. If it's the "same", I suppose there are times that can look good, but it can also look corny at times too...maybe overdone on one color or something. I recall a car I saw many, many moons ago. Had to be a '70s something beater car. Whoever had painted it green, probably with a brush or spray cans. Rims AND a good share of the tires as well, were also that same green. I think they guy had left the windows clear, but just about the whole dern car was that new color, and though it wasn't a bad color, the paint job was incredibly distasteful as it ended up. I guess, when I think of rims the same color as the vehicle, that sore example comes back to my mind....not a good vision at all! redface.gif
But, anyway....guess I never meant for this topic to be a poll on what's best or to argue about chrome vs. wagon wheels vs. plain janes vs. aluminums, but oh well....we've discussed a little bit of all of that, and that's fine. I mostly wanted to show how black looked as I don't think they ever came that way from Jeep/AMC, and that anyone wanting to consider redoing their rims, it might be an option.
And, I have no idea where Pete got off on his Pink trip, but man oh man.....you're quite a character, Pete....at least you're not boring! redface.gif )
Well....take care....

painted my wagon wheels flat black, I like it:)!
I think it gives the truck a kinda utilitarian kinda look to which I have been aspiring towars. I also painted all the shiny / chromy kinda stuff flat black on her as well...trying to get rid of any shine - again working towards the rough and ready look. I say go black, looks much better

Looks good now you just need some hubcaps. Like the small stock ones that cover up the center with Jeep in the middle.

Look close and you can see the original hubcaps on it yet at the time. I pulled them off. They rattle some, and I just plain hate hubcaps(one plus on the lummies or chromies). But, they "did" somewhat cover/protect the rims some, yes. Maybe just me, but I kinda like the plain look...oh well....
