hello people

I have just a bought a beautiful 1983 wag limited. The problem i have is i cant engage in 4x4...i must be doing something wrong. Right beside the steering colum on the right is a box that is used to go from 2 to 4 wheel drive....i pulled the lock to switch from 2 to 4, but it does not seem to engage....any solutions??? What is the name of that box?

Thanks

These directions for 4X4 operation is right out of the '84 Owners Manual. '83 & '84 GW's have the same NP 229 system.

Good luck! http://imagem.webphotos.iwon.com/1000018776/1000018776_16200264829PM0.9693415.jpg

It's vacuum operated selector switch.
Did you pull the verticle release knob all the way down before flipping the horizontal switch to 4WD? You should hear a slight hissss when it switches. You then may need to roll forward or backward a bit for the gears to line up and engage. If you hear no hisssing noise you may have a vac leak in a hose or somewhere and not getting any vac to the switch. Check all your vacuum lines beteen the switch, vacuum reservoir, x-case and the front differential since it's vacuum operated also.

I have the same problem with my 83 Ltd. as well. With mine it is the steel vacume lines coming off of the block on the motor mount on the drivers side going to the transfer case and up to the motor. I would check those to see if they are there. I found this out when I went to dive on the beach and I didn't have four wheel. So now I am saving up the cash to get those done. Out of the five that I think are there, I am missing sections to 3 of them and I can't find a vacum diagram to re run them my self with rubber if it would be possible to go from the un rusted steel to the good lines. Well, good luck in your quest to figure this out to.

Be 100% your are completely stopped, some later models allowed movement, I believe the 83 did not. How do you know you are not in 4? Have your tried to engage low range?

To find out if you are in 4, find a nice piece of gravel road, have a friend stand outside your jeep, put it in 4, turn the wheel all the way to the right and floor it.

If your friend is doubled up laughing, you are in 4....(old joke, I know...)

just kidding, but it is sometimes kind of hard to tell, I live in snow country, and do not like to leave it in 4 all winter. To test, I usually turn the wheel all the way R or L, and go forward in a tight circle. If it is 'crab walking', then it is in 4. Mine has trouble getting OUT of 4, so if I think it is stuck, I will try this test.

I just thought of another thing for you to try. If your 4-low works you should only beable to move the range lever only while you are in four-wheel because there is some kind of safety in it to prevent you from putting it in low while in 2WD. If the lever moves after you have selected 4WD your case is engaged. Your front differential Vacum motor may be shot, or like I said earlier your vacum lines may be rotted like mine are.
