I purchased a 1978 cherokee WT as a major parts donor for project I'm building. Front axle is aprox. 3.5 wider than the back. Both appear to be orig. and are 44's. Was it factory to have such with differences? I'd like to match the rear axle. Did they only encrease the front axle width on a wide track? Would a wagoneer front match? thanks

I'm not sure about the 1978's, but on the 1981's the front on a WT should be around 3" wider than the back. I think a wag front axle is about 6" shorter than the WT axle. A j-10 front axle would be about an 1" wider than your WT rear and probably the closest match.
Wider front axles are common and yes both axles on a WT Chero are wider than an NT's.
WT track width front/rear is 65.4/62.3" and an NT's is 59.4/57.8".
