I currently have two FSJ's, a 1972 J-4000 and a recently acquired 1975 J-10. Would love to get a nice condition FSJ Cherokee or Wagoneer, but I'm wondering what it would take to fix some of their shortcomings. It's probably a pie-in-the-sky idea, but hopefully it'll make for good conversation. The end result (in my mind) would be a modern drivetrain with the classic Jeep look. Almost like if FSJ's had continued to be built.
Here's what I want:
1. Fuel-injected V8 power. For the swap, I wouldn't care if it was AMC, Dodge, Ford, or Chevy. I'd go for whatever would work with the other components the best. More power, better fuel economy.
2. Overdrive transmission (for better fuel efficiency, of course). Ford AOD, Chevy 700-R4, Dodge 47RE, whatever.
3. Full-time 4wd. This is the kicker. Is it easier to adapt an original Quadra-Trac to run with the modern stuff? Seems hard since it only came with the TH400. What full-time case could fit the EFI V8 and OD tranny combo without requiring special axles? Best transfer case would be something like the Grand Cherokee's Selec-Trac, which has selectable 2wd, 4wd full-time, 4wd part-time, and 4low. But of course you'd need a vacuum disconnect front axle and (probably) computer controls. If you went that route, is there an axle that could be used?
So...can it be done?
And for the record, I know it would be easier to buy a Tahoe or Durango or something, but they don't look like FSJ's, now do they? smile.gif
