my 229 is trying to puke it's guts so I'm looking at swapping a 208.I'm going to the salvage yard tomorrow to try to find one.If I can find one in an early 80's vehicle I need to get the driveshaft also, right?I'm assuming that with the driveshaft from the donor I can drive back home and swap without too many complications.I need to get the linkage also, right?Any further assistance or confirmation of knowledge would be greatly apreciated.
Thanks,James

WHAT TRANSMISSION DO YOU HAVE?? Mine has a tf727 with the np208 but it is np 208 AM. it came in the dodge trucks also. it has a shorter chain than the chevy. i just rebuilt mine and discovered that. i though A 208 was a 208. ya learn something new every day. james

clarkja,
It is a direct bolt on of the t-case and rear driveshaft with no modifications. Make sure you do not get the parts from a J20 truck as it has a different imput shaft size. I learned that from experience!! :(
You dont need the new linkage. I am still using my original linkage that was on my 229.

Make sure its from an FSJ (driver's side drop on front axle)!
Also, read this:

Mine was a piece o' cake. I had this t-case for 2 years before I installed it. Can't believe I waited that long. I used a rear driveahft from a QT rig. Works great! The linkages match your 229 so don't sweat those. If you wanna change out the shifter, fine. Otherwise, just memorize the new shift pattern and off ya go!
I also installed manual hubs but you don't have to.
