View Full Version : Is your PCV valve here (258)?

I'm getting the oil collection in the air cleaner, and was wondering if my PCV system is OK. My valve is new. In all the books with pictures of the 258, I see the PCV valve located in the hole in the valve cover closest to the cab. The hole towards the front of the vehicle has the air intake for the PCV system, which connects to the PCV air filter. Mine are backwards from this. I know inherently that it shouldn't matter where they are connected, and I assume it's just a difference in years (mine's a 1980). I was just curious if anyone else's PCV system is set up like that, and if I'm different, I would assume a closer look is needed at some other stuff. Some hoses are plugged and changed around. Can the system plug up like on a 360??

Mine is an '81. My service manual has the valve in the front and the intake in the back. I has to be this way because the intake has a little filter inside the air cleaner and goes via a molded rubber hose to the grommet in the back. You want the engine to inhale filtered air so that dirt doesn't get into the crankcase. Bad news for all the bearings if your oil is gritty. The outlet hose has the valve and snakes all the way around to the back of the carb to a big vacuum port. Since the vacuum creates the "positive" one-way direction, you can't be getting oil via the PCV system. It must be coming from somewhere else, but beats me from where if you are really plumbed correctly.

The picture in my Haynes or Chilton has an older 258, and has these reversed, and the air cleaner is smaller, too.

Look inside your air cleaner for the filter. Mine can only be plumbed as I have explained because the position of the filter demands it or else the air cleaner snorkel cannot face the front. I got the hose and elbow from a Jeep dealer and their diagram shows the same thing--inlet in the rear valve in the front. The grommets and valve I got at AutoZone and it was labelled AMC not Jeep
