Just popped open the tranny and boy what a stench. Seems the fluid from previous ownership was due for replacing 150,000 miles ago or so. Anyhow, my new filter came with a gasket. Should I use the cork gasket or go buy a different kind?

The cork one should work fine. Just make sure the tranny pan flange (say that five times fast) is flat and even.

I had to put the bolts back on much tighter than I would have guessed to keep it from leaking.

Tranny pan flange, tranny pan flange, tranny pan flange, tranny pan flange, tranny pan flange. How was that :D ?
The cork one will be just fine. But like Bob said make sure it is straight.

hmmmm..I think I should look at my tranny pan flange. smile.gif
Is it as easy as Haynes says to adjust the bands? My tranny was slipping real bad in reverse, so I am hoping the burnt up fluid and loose bands are the reason.

Loose rear band would cause that. It's easy, if you have a square-headed socket (Sears sells the 8-point sockets you need; some cheap socket sets also include some in the size you need) and a in/lbs torque wrench.

Bluesky4x4,
Use a torque wrench when tightning down the tranny pan bolts in a criss-cross pattern and you should have any leaks. The torque specs are in the Haynes manual. Good luck.
