I am trying to get my kickdown fixed before the parts store closes, I bought a manual this morning and in it it says to check the wot switch, I dont think I have one (1980 wagoneer) so I then look at the section on vacume mods and cant find that either. I looked at the top of my accel petal nothing there. In the pic they give of the vacume mod it looks like it is right at the front of the tranny but cant find it. Anyone know what exactly I have in the truck and where EXACTLY it is located? The book is a little vauge and everything is so packed in there I can hardly see anything. Oh and one more thing while looking for my wot switch I found a black box up under the dash it is mabey 4 in wide and 6 long with mabey 12 or 15 wires going into it, It has plugs on it so I assume it was not an add on but what is it? I'll take a pic if no one knows for sure. Thanks

what drivetrain do you have?

I didn't think 80's have a vacuum modulator. They were on the T400's and I believe the 80's have a 727. My kickdown is controlled by a linkage on the carb located directly next to the throttle cable. It has a bent wire that looks like a small version of the handle for Jiffy Pop Popcorn, then attaches to a rod that goes down towards the transmission. I've adjusted it by trial and error, but I'm sure there is an official way to do it.

Thanks that must have been the problem, I thought the mystery black box might have been in the way a little so I moved it and went thru the procedure to adjust the clip you were talking about and now it works. now on to my oil leak. I know its coming from somewhere above the crank but cant see up in there to locate it. If i wipe the bottom of the cover and let it run it kinds comes down just to the sides of the crank, not really close enough to make me think it's the crank seal but pretty close. My question here is the very bottom of the timing chain cover almost looks like it could possibly have a hairline crack, not sure though. Should I just get a new timing cover before tearing it apart? I know they are pricey but I really dont want to screw with it more than once, which also makes me wonder if I should replace the chain while I'm in there. What are your thoughts here? And thanks for the quick replies

I'd rule out other things before replacing the cover. There are alot of joints in that area that could leak. Mine needed the oil pan to be snugged, which helped, but did not cure a leak in the same area. The timing cover is not only expensive, but is a bear to get to. Of course, I'm pretty inept. It took me two long afternoons to replace the water pump, which bolts to the front of that cover. All of the drive accessories bolt to the front there.

Little black box is most likely for cruise control.
