if your facing the engine it is the valve below tand to the elft of the brack fluid res. has a "S" shape hose on it. off of the air pump

It's the check valve for the air pump - basically it protects the air pump in the event that you backfire.
As I recall, these aren't that expensive - and that's not even a relative Jeep term.

probably causing an exhaust leak isnt it? i would replace it for that reason. also you will want to replace it if you have to submitt to emission testings.as far as engine performance it wont change anything. the air pump system is there to pump oxygen into the exhaust stream to allow unburnt fuel to finish burning(in small amounts)
to reduce hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions.

keep wondering why it wont pass...Looked in there today and the hose looked like it was off..and it was off the rusted tube, crumbled in my hand

no problemo ;)
That opening will allow some very hot exhaust gases let loose in the engine compartment. They burnt a hole in my brake reservoir. I would plug the opening with a bolt or something until I fixed it, speaking from experience. The hoses and plastic fittings above the valve are not built for exhaust heat.

I replaced the one on the right last year, it was about $25, in stock. But, the "air injection manifold" it was screwed onto was shot, too, @$40, special order.
I looked like the left side had been done by PO, but now it's got a hole in it. I'll never get this thing quiet!

The same check valve was used on just about everything (GM etc.) so
should be over the counter, the manifold is/was avalible aftermarket so
it is not to bad either, the bolt gaskets are spark plug washers so easy to
get also, but I don't know of a source of after market bolts so those get
a little spendy.
