i need a new starter relay, but non of the auto parts place have ever heard of it, let alone be able to find it in their computer. i have an 85 GW 360. would it be listed under solenoid for my model? should i just ask for the starter solenoid? i dont have the option of taking the part to them. i'll have to get a friend to pick it up and bring it into town on his way to work.
I bought mine at a dealer for about 15.00

Your 85 has a Starter solenoid. The Starter Relay was not used till 87 or 88 and up

Yes it is called a starter solinoid. I have a part number from Car Quest for my 79 I think it would be the same. 8-978 is the part number but is pretty old. $5.00 iirc.
Hope that helps

i got it from o'reily's. my haynes manual listed it as the starter relay as well as their computer. it attaches to the passenger side fender well. it has 5 teminals on it: 2 on top, 1 on each side, and 1 on the bottom.

Should be able to get these just about anywhere, it's the same part used on zillions of older Fords. Most will call it a starter solenoid, even though technically it is a relay.

THe'Zone has them for $12. Advance/Discount does too but I can't remember the price, it should be close to Autozones though. Ask for solenoid not relay.
