I am ooking for a cheap brush guard for a 91 GW. Something to protect the front end from deer as I ride to work. Nothing fancy or chrome. I did a search in the forum for brush guards but didn't turn up anything. Can anyone list some companies that sell brush guards for GW's? TIA

I looked at these bars and, while of excellent quality, they were far too expensive for me to consider. Plus, he will not galvanize the bars.

So... I contacted a buddy of mine who runs a welding/fabrication shop, and explained my requirements for a bar that would take a deer and throw it back into the ditch without damaging either my grille or fenders (we're like Pennsylvania up here- LOTS of deer!). And he smiled, and walked back out of the shop with.... a stock, aluminum deer/brush bar that he had taken off a full-size D**** Ram. It has two horizontal bars, and the tubular aluminum surrounds around the headlights. We test fitted it, and it looked like a factory set-up.

My buddy cut through the plastic spoiler-doohickey beneath the bumper, then welded steel 4x4 channel brackets directly perpendicular to the frame and bolted the bar to this. Looks outstanding, and he GUARANTEED me that this would deal with any deer strike!

I also had him weld on four aluminum (3/16) tangs onto the bar- two on the top slat and two on the bottom, to take a set of Hella 500 driving lights on the top slat and the stock GW Bosch fogs on the bottom. With the Hella H4 replacement headlights I'm running, I now feel well equppped to take back the night.

Total cost for the bar, installed? $CDN200 for the bar and $50 to install it. Sorry, I don't know the bar manufacturer, and I don't have a digital camera to post pictures.

FWIW

The style of bar is of no concern.... how did it bolt up to the frame?????

Did you have to make any "adjustments" to any brackets?

What was involved?

If it was just a matter of bolting it in....I will make everyone on here deals on Ram Brushguards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Drop Shipped to your home from my shop in Indiana!!!!!!1

He took ~4" long pieces of 4x4 square steel tube, and arc-welded one onto each side of the frame, immediately above the front spring perches, creating mounting "posts".

Then, he fabricated two 1/4" thick steel plates that he welded onto the ends of each of the two 4x4 "posts", and drilled two mounting holes into each of these plates. The spacing of the mounting holes on each plate was the same as the spacing of the mounting holes in the stock, aftermarket Ram brush guard (Note: we did nothing to the aftermarket Ram brush guard- nothing).

Then, the Ram brush bar was mounted onto the steel plates through the four (two holes per plate) holes in the plates. No shims were required, as the plates were measured and built exactly the same width apart as the brush bar's mounting holes (which, I presume, were set to the exact width of a Ram's frame). (Note: my guy really knows his stuff- don't let an amateur mess about with your truck!)

The rubber spoiler thing under the bumper was cut away between the front springs to permit the brush guard to reach under the bumper to pick up the mounting holes in the plates.

Sounds complicated when I write this, but it is really simple in operation, and only took a couple of hours or so to fabricate. Cheap fabrication materials, that's for certain. If you have access to a Ram brush guard, even one with the tubular light protectors, you can test fit it to see how close it conforms to to the later GW front ends (maybe the earlier ones too?). Then, I would think that any good welder/fabricator in your area could do what my guy did, and create a really sharp, really strong deer bar for your GW.

I just can't get over how guys driving new, big-dollar Rams, F250s, etc. will come up to my truck (which last year cost only $2100 safetied and has a few rust splotches), and rave over how good the front end looks with the bar and lights. Go figure- Jeep got the FSJ designed right the first time!

I don't know if this is a full brush guard Go Rhino (http://www.carparts.com/parts/newsearch2.asp?reflink=49927-0-00349412163508742463-0-0&sourceid=2&parttypeid=2039&itemid=166&autoidsearch=YES) but on carparts.com it is listed as an option for 79-91 GWs'. I can't find it on Go Rhinos' website however. It is only $249.00. Can anyone confirm if it really is a full brush guard and does bolt up to a GW?

There are two different pieces there. The "grille guard" is the part that comes up from under the bumper and cover the grille, the part in the middle. The "brush guard" are the parts that go around the headlights.

Looks like they come in a combo so you get the whole set up.

Sorry fellas, I have called every manufacturer and they are no longer available. I thought I was on to a warn winch bumper, from warn's warehouse but the guy had already got rid of it. Other than that, no one had seen them in a few years.

Sorry,

Andy

Wow, that really sucks!!! I was in the market for a guard back when I had my GW's, and I found them to be scarce and expensive, but none of the big manufactures make them anymore? :(

Well......Looks like I got an excuse to go get that tubing bender and mig welder. :D Ha! I wish.

My future neighbor(still building his house)is a welder, and I've talked with him about some of the accessories I want to make. Mabey he can make a pruduction run.....Hmm....I will talk with him some more.
