View Full Version : Chevy drivetrain in an FSJ......Advice please!
Ok, the 78 Chief is gone (but not forgotten), and I'm ready for my next FSJ. I like the idea of a GM drivetrain (EFI engine, trans, and t-case) but need advice on which GM drivetrain to look for. I have a good working knowledge of Jeep configurations; but not GM. I'm thinking EFI 350, 700r4, w/NP 208 or maybe 241, but don't know which years t-cases drop on what sides and which GM EFI would be preferrable. With this info I'll know whether to concentrate my search on a pre '80 or '80 and later FSJ. Any GM experts out there? Any other advice?

I am no expert but there are custom EFI kits for jeeps as well.. but the people you might want to get in contact with would be Retro93 (kim), and RamjetFSJ (ben) both have Chevy powertrains and are in the process of finishing up their jeeps.

Figure out what your budget is an go with the best you can afford. Swapping a GM engine into a FSJ is so simple.
The 32 spline NP208 is the best of the chain driven cases but a NP205 is the king of the mountain.
It all comes down to how much you want to spend and how well you can scrounge.

I was going to do this too, currently on hold for budget reasons. But here is what you need:
350/700R4 out of a mid 80's 1/2 or 3/4 ton truck/SUV. The tranny will have the proper tail cone and output shaft for a T-case. Then you get the proper 208 (Pass or Driver drop) for the year FSJ you get. The IFS trucks are Driver drop and the early solid axle are Pass drop.
That said you can get a 2wd setup but you'll have to take the tranny apart to change out the output shaft.
Two more questions. Will I need the centered rear axle to work with a GM t-case; and should I confine my search to the NP 208 or does anyone know much about the 241? BTW Ram Jet that thing rules! The exhaust alone is a work of art.
