Thanks again for all the advice it has really paid off!!!!! I sh## canned that flowcooler and installed a pump from O-Rielly for a 76 Cherokee 401. That dropped my temp on the hi-way after 20 min by 30 degrees!!huge step in the right direction!!.(as i type this I am getting grease on the keys man my wife is gonna be pi##ed) anyway flushed the radiator--she like she likes--dropped another 5 deg. Installed the timed port(carb vacume)to the EGR now I am down to about 200 stable cruising temp at 70(still a little hotter than I would like to be)the hot summers are coming and it was 80 today so that temp aint gonna make it. But at least right now the flow is slower and the radiator has a chance, and no more sticking t-stats!!!!--even the robert shaw I had stuck??!!. Right now I am flushing the radiator again and will run the mixture(flush mixture) on the way into work tomarrow so I can really flush it out. I have only had the **** thing for 1 year(radiator 4 core) but that old 360 must have really left its mark. Anyway we are getting there and thanks for the help. And as luck would have it today my driver side window plastic rail(inside the door it pulls the window up and down) broke--always another project!!!Anyone know where I can get one? Also I am really looking into the bigger jets for my carter 9000 625 for the richening up of the mixture at cruise speeds anyone know what the part number is/who I need to contact. Any other advice appreciated summer is comming and 200-215deg aint gonna cut it with the wife and A/C.
Thanks again, Kirk

Have you tried Water Wetter or 40 Below, radiator additives? You may get another 10 degree drop in temps. I hear, two bottles work better than one.

One of the best things for proper cooling is to have the motor tuned. Also check your a/c condenser to ensure that it's not clogged and that it's getting enough air thru.

This link might give you a few more ideas about how to lower the operating temperature.

Khurst, on more thing you need/want. That will be a fan shroud, if you don't have one already. These motors need them, in a big way. If you need one, look to www.bjsoffroad.com (http://www.bjsoffroad.com) He has them for FSJ's especially. Another nice to have item, that will take a little modification, is a fan clutch from a GMC motorhome, Hayden p/n 2797, IIRC.

The mod you'll have to do is to cut slots, where four of the bolts go. You'll be able to see which ones, when you look at it, compared to a stock unit. It's called a Super Duty fan clutch for a 454/motorhome combo. Price should be near $100, or so.

I solved much cooling problems in my CJ with a shroud and flex fan. The Flex fan pushes more air at idle (Mine got hot at idle) but I'm not sure it pushes more air at high rpm because they flatten out to build poneys, so it might make it worse. Something you might research though.

Hmmmm....my 401 (std bore, though) NEVER ran hot, and it doesn't have a fan shroud! Did I get lucky or what?!?!?

Them Carter carbs got a strip kit you can pick up that has a whole set of needles and seats, then you can pick and chose.

I'm interested in this thread as(hopefully) my warmed over 401 will be installed soon and I'm worried it'll run hot.

Khurst, surprised to hear that switching OUT a Flowkooler pump would help the engine run cooler.
Thought those had a pretty good rep with fsjers.
I have been planning on using the h2o pump design with the plate on the impeller(like Flowkooler),but will probably go with the GMB brand pump as they build for the oems, have a very good rep and they weld the impeller plate on instead of rivets....Still I gotta watch that front cover to impeller clearance....
Who makes the O-Rielly and does it have the impeller plate like the Flowkooler/GMB?

Thanks,

Mike B
