View Full Version : Motor mount?

I am trying to replace a broken drivers side motor mount. I have a new mount and have removed the nuts from the old mount. I have tried raising the engine with a jack, lifting from the oil pan. The problem is the engine moves up but a gap does not open between the engine-mount-bracket and the frame-mount-bracket. I am not sure how much you have to raise the engine before the two brackets seperate and I don't want to break the passenger side mount (looks like a real pain to replace) or anything else. I know from doing a search of this forum that you can replace the mounts one side at a time, so what am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Dave

You have to loosen both mounts to lift the motor enough to change either side. Just pull the nuts off, then you should have no prob getting enough room.

Makes sense. I should have thought of that.

Reminds of the time I tried lifting the engine in my 74 Nova so I could take the pan off and put a high volume pump in. I had no idea what I was doing, but the engine wasn't moving up enough. Took me a long time to discover the transmission aka rear engine mount was holding things up (or down in this case). Took me until midnight on Sunday to finish.
Its amazing how everything seems so clear now in comparison to back then. There is nothing liking wrenching to learn how to wrench. There will also always be new problems to solve, so don't worry about ever learning it all ;)
Nograin did you remember to pull the distributor cap on the nova ? smile.gif

Hee hee,
Don't remember doing that, but it was a straight 6 250, not a small block!
To be honest, I think that was the best motor to learn on. Little emmisions controls, points type ignition, lots of room on both sides. Oops, I'm supposed to be a mopar & jeep man ;)
