I've got an oddball fsj with a 304,it currently has an egr intake on it but emissions are not an issue as it is a 74 model.I've got my parts bought gaskets etc. to replace a blown intake gasket,if I swap a non egr intake in place what if any timing, vaccuum etc, issues should I be aware of?

You don't have to swap the intake. If you are going to take off the emissions then just fab a plate for the egr hole. You will need to richen the carb for sure. Timing shouldn't be any trouble.

... and if you're really lazy, you can just leave the EGR valve on there, but don't hook it up to vacuum, to keep it permanently closed.
To get the proper air/fuel mixture, perhaps an easier way would be to start with an Autolite/Motorcraft 2100 2-bbl carb from a '68-'72 Ford 302. Such units can probably be picked up for pocket-change from people who have upgraded their Mustangs, Broncos or F150's to 4-bbls, and their jetting would be just about right for your 304.

on the subject of ford 302's, I understand in 87 that ford used a TBI setup on some 302's,would it be reasonable to expect a "bolt in" swap with some minor wiring changes?
Thanks for the advice the reason i suggested swapping intakes is I have one of each and have to replace the gasket anyway.
