I was trying to figure out my occasional stalling problem (I stall at traffic lights after idling for a minute or two...but only happens once in a while), and I was going through the manual doing some tests. I checked the emissions canister and the book said it should hold vacuum for at least 20 seconds. SO I hooked up my little doodad and started pumping away..guess what??? ABSOLUTELY no hold vacuum whatsoever. Then, for some strange reason I decided to check the vacuum advance on my distributor...guess what??? ABSOLUTELY no vacuum holding capability there either.
So I was hoping with the combinations of these two things...since I would have a slight vacuum leak, as well as no vacuum advance. I went to the local junk yard and found an 84 wagoneer that I snagged a canister out of, and another jeep truck (not sure what type) that I pulled the vacuum advance off of. Both of those units held vacuum perfectly.
Put them on the jeep..and guess what??? Car wouldn't start...turns out that the vacuum advance I had before must have been stuck along with not holding vacuum and all this time I was set either way to advance, or way retarded. So I had to spin the dizzy a bit to get it started. I then set the timing to 10 degrees BTDC and all seemed fine. Seemed to idle a lot better now. Took it around the block, and man can I tell a difference. A lot more responsive!
Just thought I'd share.
