when i turn the key it just makes a vibrating noise, i cant tell whether the started sylenoid is vibrating or the starter so i put on a new sylenoid, same problem, i pulled the starter and it bench tested fine, i ran a new cable to the starter from the sylenoid to the starter, all im getting is a vibrating grinding noise, help me out i want to drive the man truck to work!

Sounds like a bad ground or connection, or dead battery.

but it is not a clicking noise like i would expect with a dying battery, it is more of a grinding or vibrating noise, my battery is dead now from continously tring to get the thing to run by i throw a charger with a booster on it to get it to turn over but it just does the grinding thing

Did you try jumping the battery?

i was trying to jump it with the booster, but all i get is the grinding, could be worn teeth on the flywheel or starter gear i was thinking, but when i took out the starter, the gear seemed to be ok, worn around the edges but im not sure how much teeth are needed to engage the flywheel, this sucks

My 86 Grnd Waggie did that too. The starter made a grinding noise every once in a while then it would quit starting the engine altogether and just grind. When I pulled the starter off it was worn on the edges of the gear and the teeth on the flywheel were starting to wear. I think if I had replaced the starter and done that a few more times the flywheel teeth would be shot completely.I think the starter/flywheel settings weren't well thought off and the starter doesn't engage as deep as it is supposed too.

it sounds like the spring that engages the gear is not doing its job and the teeth are not gripping the flywheel right. (bendix spring?)take it apart and check it out, they should sell these at AAP or somewhere. At least they do here.
