Alright FSJers' I simply twisted my front driveshaft awhile back in my 81 j 10, and I need a replacement. Is it in my best intrest to have one made, or can i put a used one from a junkyard in? How much would a new one cost? Are there any good shops in the D.C. area? Do any of you have one that you might like to let go? thank's for any input. - Brian

I have been known to break a shaft or 2 and have snatched up all the front shafts from the local yards from 6 cylinder rigs so I can take them into work (after hours, of course)and shorten them to fit my rig. Used ones are fine as long as the double cardan joint is in good shape.

One from a junkyard is alright like Bob said just make sure that the double cardin joint is good. If you don't know the joint consists of two u-joints and a centering yoke. The centering yoke is what you have to be concerned with. Best way to check it is to grab the shaft and move it side to side. If it is sloppy then the centering yoke is bad. If you do get one from a yunkyard it wouldn't be a bad idea to go ahead and change it and the u-joints.
