Okay. heres the delima. I can only get the cherokee to start up by dumping gas or srarter fluid in the carb. (360 2 barrel) It will run for about 5-10 seconds and then start "popping" and shut off. I have new plugs, wires, fuel filter and other misc. items. I did how ever catch fire to it.(oops might have left that out). some of the vacum lines were singed but no real damage. There is one hard line that comes off the manifold on the passangers side that leads to the back of the carb that is not conected. Dont know what it is. Also, on the very front of the carb at the top in the middle, ther is a place that looks like a hose should fit but there is not one there and i cant find anything that could go to it. Call me dumb, but Im a fuel injection baby, I know nothing about the carb era. Could it be the fuel pump? Am I not getting vacumm? Help!!!! Thanks for not making to much fun of me(cheap shots are welcom as well as advice.)and as always any advice is welcome!

Hey now relax! you'll get it! It sure sounds like the fuel pump to me!! Pull the fuel line off the carb and stick it in a jar and crank it around a couple of times and see if a quantity of gas comes out! Carefull now, one stray spark and kaboom!! AGAIN!!!!!

that hard line should go to your choke assemble, and if not used you should cap it off cause i beleive that is direct manifold vacuum, that nipple in the top front of the carb is your fuel bowl vent and doesnt really matter (except for you california guys!) with the air cleaner off look down the carb and pump the throttle and see if you get to healthy streams of gas, if not its your pump

Color me stupid if I'm wrong, but I think pumping the throttle will only tell you if the power diaphragm thingy is working (sorry, I forgot the actual name) and if there is fuel in the bowl. The fuel pump works off the eccentric on the end of the cam, so only cranking the engine over will show if the pump is working. Do what hotrod said and that should let you know what's going on. You will definately need to take care of that vacuum line coming off the manifold.

if the (accelerator pump) is pumping fuel that means there is fuel in the bowl and if there is fuel in the bowl then the fuel pump would have had to of pumped it there, that doesnt mean his pressure is where it should be but these are just quick checks

Since you can get it to 'fire' by putting gas in the carb you have eliminated any electrical problems. It also probably is not flooding since adding gas down the carb makes it start.
1. Are you out of gas?
2. Were you out of gas and how much gas did you add to the tank.
I ran mine dry once. Had to put 5 gallons of gas in the tank before it would start again.
I just messed with my carb. Most of the time when I am doing that I take the time to put the air cleaner back on to (hopefully) avoid a fire.
I ended up having to remove the top of the carb and run the engine like that. I was nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. I had two fire extinghisers handy and a plan for pushing it out of the garage.. Fortunatly no boom!

It has 15 gallons of gas in the tank. I'll cap the line and pull the fuel line to check the pump. Like I said im new to the whole carb thing.Yea fires are bad, Trust me i keep a fire extsingushers in all my vehichles. and the house. Im bad with anything flamable. Anymore advice is sure welcome! Thanks everyone!

Yeah careful with the tuning while running. I was tweeking a carb and it back fired while I was on top and lets just say my eyebrows were a little crispy for a while. LOL
