Will the doors off a 84 Grand Wagoneer fit on a 79 Cherokee. How about the tailgate? I have access to a GW with full power and thought it might be nice to change the doors to my Cherokee. I didn't know whether the front doors on the GWs were the same size as the Cherokees. If anyone can help me out, Id appreciate it.
thanks

I measured the doors on a wag and they are the same as my j-10. I think all front doors are the same whether 2 or 4 door.

The doors and tailgate will be a direct swap on the years in question. There is no difference b/w the cheros and the wags, the only dif is in the years.
Pre-78 have the rod on the door, 79 and newer have the rod on the body. Either way, they can still be swapped with a little TLC. However, there will be no swapping of parts for the years you listed.

It will probably work but wont be that easy. The strikers and latches are different on the 84. Also hinges too the 79's hinges will swing open more I'd keep those. You'll need the weatherstrips off the 84 too or equivlent. They changed to a bulb style rather than a flatter strip. So I guess try and see if you can put the 84's strikers on the 79 and see if it will all line up. If not you might need to drill some holes.

Thanks for the replies! Sitting Bull, you said, "However, there will be no swapping of parts for the years you listed", what do you mean by that? Didn't you say that post 79 were the same?
If I can pick up the Wag for the $ I want, I'll get it and swap what I can, thanks again guys.

Oops, typo. What a I meant to say is there will be no PROBLEMS swapping parts on those years. In other words, it will fit right in.

I put a set of power doors off a mid 80's wag on my J20 and as PA said it is a pain in the Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley. I changed the latch in the door using my existing latch and striker. I did have to drill new holes shorten a couple of bolts and push, pull, bang, bleed, cuss etc. for quite a while. There is a slight difference of position in the lock tumbler opening as well and the alignment of the lock (shaft?)(rod?) I had issues with this until I did a bit of creative grinding on the rod. If you are changing to power doors you will have to enlarge the front post opening for the harness as well. I am not certain if this is in all cases but it was in mine. After I ground the shaft down considerably I was able to use the key to open the door. I do not have a lot of faith in the strength of the shaft now and I have another set of doors off a 77 that will bolt on after I transfer the power equipment. I am not very good with the sheet metal so maybe someone else will have a better idea.

So J20fan, Are you saying that it would be best just to swap the power equipment into my existing doors? That doesn't sound too bad I guess....but I suppose we'll see when it comes to it.
I would probably not do it if my cranks weren't so hard to turn. Does anyone have any fixes for that? Just take the cranks out of the door and clean em up? Can it be that simple?

Well I am going to do the swap myself. I am just not happy with the way the latch worked out for me on the newer doors. I have never changed the power equipment on a wag door either but I have on other vehicles and did not find it a bad job.

J20fan, your wag looks great. Couldn't connect to you J20 though. Looks like you have some kind of replacements seats in the Wag. What kind did you use? How much fabrication was necessary?

That's an old picture of the Wag I will have to get a new one up. My J20 link is dead until I can take new pics or find my old ones  I had a bit of a meltdown and never did get back at the website. The seats were in when I bought it but it appears they were mounted directly to the stock hardware as they are hooked up to the original power controls. The seats are comfortable and I would reccomend them if I ever figure out what they are. Do a search for seats and you will find lots of info. I am removing the seats and carpets pretty quick so I will take a good look at that time for a tag or stamp.

Can it be that simple? It is pretty simple actually. Take the door panels off and get some lithium spray and spray lubricant on the gears and lube everything up good. They should work like new.
