I am wondering where all the oil leaks could be coming from under a Jeep. I know rear main seal, isn't there one more? I know power steering fluid can leak too. What do they generally run to have fixed in a shop?

my only oil leak is at the oil sending unit. I replaced the one I had (which was leaking) and I am not sure that I tightened it enough. At the time it was the only running car and I didn't want to break it.

My TC leaks at the drain plug too.

Main sources of oil leaks are, oil pressure sending unit, oil pump cover gsket, valve covers, front timeing cover, oil pan gasket, rear main seal. I have reolaced all the ones mentioned, the only one I had done was the rear seal, it ran about $200. The oil sending unit, oil pump cover gasket, and valve covers are easy and fairly inexpensive. The others involve taking a lot of stuff off, so the seal/gasket is inexpensive, but the labor is high. Planning can go a long way here. For instance, I replaced the entire front cover set ($13) when I installed a new timing chain, since I had to remove the cover to get to the chain. Valve cover leaks usually run down the side of the block, oil pump and sending unit leaks are right side towards the front, timing cover leaks are at the front, but usually spray all over because of the fan, rear seal is back of the engine, center, so it drips right next to your transmission leak. :D The plus side is that many of the bolts/parts underneath come off easy 'cause they are covered with oil and don't rust.

You've got to remember, if you fix all the oil leaks, you will have a rust problem. M.G.

i just harvested my 83. the front seat came out in 20 minutes. the one on my 88 took over 2hours because the captive nuts got loose. guess which had the leaky trans? the trans x member was a piece o cake lying on my back in the snow.(no mosquitos) bolts looked new. atf is a great rust proofer. oil leaks keep the oil pan from rotting out. end run 360s are prone to this.

As you can see oil leaks are common. You do have to keep an eye on them because when it starts pouring something must be done. This happened to my timing chain cover seal this past week. It was pouring out and I thought it had a hole in it but it was just the seal. Also, I am replacing the timing chain while in there.

Transmission fluid leaks alot of times from the hoses running to the radiator. Mine wore a hole in the tubing where it was rubbing on the axle.

I usually think worst case scenario but generally they are fairly easy fixes.

My '88 and the '79 I parted had this problem; I wire-wheeled the pan, and when held up to a light-source it did a little planetarium display.

BTW, Andy: nice meeting you today, and thanks for the parts. I might actually swing back there tomorrow morning for the PS Box and maybe some axle parts... smile.gif
