Seems there's a bunch of T18s around for Ford trucks. Anyone have any experience or ideas as to a possible swap into an FSJ? I want one for my 85 wagoneer, I've got a NP208 (23 spline) and all the pedals and linkages from a J10. :(

I apologize if this isn't much help but I'm curious to know what the answer is myself...
The 2 places I know of that make tranny/tcase adapters are Advance and Novak.
http://www.advanceadapters.com/catalog/catalog.html http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transfer_case_gateway.htm
Both seem to offer only to the SWB or XJ crowd. I didn't see anything for FSJ or NP208.
Is there any other way to adapt a T18 (ford or jeep) other than finding the rare J20 with T18 and 208?

The problem with putting a Ford T-18, T-19 or NP 435 in a FSJ will be the location of the shifter. The T-18A used in Jeeps had an extrememly long input shaft [12 1/2" or so] and a 7" thick adaptor plate that goes between the trans. and bellhousing. This adaptor moves the transmission back far enough to allow the shifter to come up in front of the dash.
Advanced Adaptors offers a 23 spline output adaptor for use with the Jeep T-18 and NP 207,231,241 transfer cases [#50-7502]. It is for a left hand drop [drivers side]application which would work in your rigs. The NP208 uses the same round six bolt mounting ring that is common to the 207,231,241 cases, so this adaptor "might" work. I would suggest checking with Advanced to get their opinion.
Hope this helps.

Kim

hmmmm, I might have access to a long shaft fsj T18 so I would have to either swap difs or go with the adapter to 208 {thinking out loud}

its cheaper and easier to simply swap your front axle. the older t18/d20 is alot easier to find than the t18/208.
i swapped my frontend ahwile back to use a d300.its well worth the effort. with a driver side diff you are limited to aluminum new process cases and the ford 205,which is not easily adaptable unless youre also using the ford tranny.with the pass side diff you cna use the gm 205,d18,d20 or d300,all of which are cast iron and gear driven.
id be willing to bet if you were clever in your serches you could find a front axle, and a jeep t18/d20 for less than the price of a ford t18,the adapter/tailshaft.especially if you factor in having a tranny shop swap the output shaft for you.
as was mentioned, using the 435/205 will put the shifter under the dash, but you should be able to take care of that with some creative shifter bending.ive know people to use 6cyl t176s,t18s,and gm sm465s in V8 powered fsjs,so an np 435 is still quite a feasible swap.if you want to keep your front end,id look into swapping a jeep belhouisng onto a np 435/205 combo,if you have to adapt something, the belhouising is prolly the easier one to adapt.
i persnally like to stay away from alot of custom adapters,if possible. if youve got a 46 desoto tranny mated to a nissan 4 cyl,and it breaks in the woods, far from any kind of machine shop or custom 4x4 shop, what are you gonna do? granted thats not a likely engine/tranny combo but you get the point smile.gif
and maybe its not likely to have an adapter spudshaft or tranny to xfer adapter break, but i think it is somethin else to consider...
my $.02 anyway...

I agree that no adaptars is better. I'd be happy with a T177 if I could find one. Of course I'd prefer the T18. Both of these seem to be hard to find so I'm looking at alternatives. I'd rather not swap the front end but it is looking like a better option the more I think and read about it.

im now on my 3rd front end smile.gif swapped original driver side for a 79 narrow trac passenger side, then swapped the narrow trac for a 77 wide trac.
im about to swap my rear end(which will ake rear end #3) and rather than disassembling the front to match the gears,i may set up my spare widetrac front, build a truss, then swap out the front again.so ill be on front end #4 by summer.
if you want to keep your front end cause of the work involved in swapping, rest assured its not such a terrible job, long as you provide pizza and beer(pepsi in my case ;) ) to get a couple buddies over to help ya heave it in and out.if your U bolts havent ever been off,id reccomend not bothering with em. save yourself some time and just cut em and buy new ones.
if its the money involved, its kinda 6 of one half a dozen of the other if you hafta buy adapters to make a tranny work.im sure you could swap in an older t18/d20 and front end for less that a $600 adapter smile.gif
have fun with your project however you end up going

sorry slippery i sold it to one of my frineds to put under his scout ii.we are in the process of springing it over, and used the wag housing to get better front alignment.apparently the scout 44 has 0* caster, and the wag has 4* so hopefully it will drive worth a crap and follow him on the towbar now.
kyrel is about to get a new tow rig,so you could prolly get his wag for somewhere in the $500-$600 range.you could use the frame/drivetrain,or just wheel it as its,it is perfect for a hack job like mine-its banged up but has 0 rust. he also has some cj stuff he wont need- i think hes got a cj d30 that you might be able to get for cheap. if you wanna keep your 231,check with narnian-he had an 80 or 81 parts rig that you might be able to get cheap...
ill keep my eyeballs peeled for ya  you will be expected to ride along and see what he can do when the pinion angle isnt snapping a U joint every 15 feet :D

Gimme the word, I'm there...do you guys play in the snow, or just fair weather?

yes,we do play in the snow. its cool wheelin in snow, till yas gotta get out and fix somethin  ive got a new vinyl top made, and got both my doors back on,tho the passneger side wants a new plexi window made, due to the slight deformity of my rollover a couple months ago. i also had to use no fewer than 18 washers between the latch mechanism and the door jamb smile.gif due to some tree contact on the passenger side.
we are hoping for a local test runmaybe on new years, but not 100% sure whats goin on just yet.ill keep ya advised whenever some defiante plans are made.
im hoping for at least 2,maybe 3 trips out of my squished tube 44 before i have to tear it apart and start on 3/4 ton axle install.
