Okay to start off... THANK YOU SAMBO.. i got the T/C today and it looks great.. thank you again!

Okay I haven't popped it apart but... I was messing with it and its got some play between the front output and the rear.. Well I held one side then marked and moved the other.. well I measured between the two marks and its got 3/8 of a difference in play... I remember seeing a post about this but I searched and searched but didn't find it.. Does this NP208 need a new chain.. also a rebuild maybe?? Where should I get a rebuild kit???

Okay next..

I am draining my old one NP229 and its kind of slimy... its looks like Trans fluid mixed with some clear gooie(?sp?) substance... It was pretty well built up on the drain plug too...what is it? Is it normal???

Thanks for advice!!

Well i do not think that is to bad. However it is now out, and would be a good time to put a new chain in it, and maybe the shift fork pads and seals.

I spoke with a tranny shop in town about my 208 and the chain was about $70 and a seal/ gasket kit was around $30. just be careful not to lose any needle bearings. Pack them in with vaseline.

the funky goo you see is likey the silicone from a ruptured viscuous coupling. when my frineds went bad thats basically what it looked like-kinda slivery, gooey, along with snuff metal shavings that it looked like metallic paint :D

also,i dot remember any needle bearings in the 208 i took apart. if i remember correctly everyting in it and the 207 were caged bearings,so a chain swap on a 208 shoud be easy.

i agree with pete. the chain is prolly fine, but the pads and forks are hihg wear items that should be checked, and its not a bad idea to put a chain in it while you have it apart to check everyting for wear.

Inside the planetary, or am I thinking of a 203 I did?

While the input and output shafts do have caged bearings, the parts-book shows the NP208 to be just like the NP229; a LOT of tiny loose needle-bearings in the middle of the mainshaft.

When pulling the chain, pull ONLY on the sprocket, while somebody holds the mainshaft securely down in place. If you let it pop up too far, you get to play 184-needle-bearing pickup. :(

Do you all assume that the local parts house should have all of these or should I order them up from someone special? Any recomendations?

Okay well I started to crack the case today, it started to open easy and then it started to struggle.. It kind of felt stuck. And i didn't want to force anything.. So is there a trick to this. I only took off the bolts to the main section but left the output caps on.. Do i need to take these off too.. of do I just need to put a little bit of elbow grease into this? and advice is welcome.. thanks!

Okay well this bad boy is completely disasembled.. now what do i need to look for for worn parts?
The chain looks good in my eyes and i can't see any noticable wear anywere... About the movement I described earlier: When I poped the rear half and tried to move it again.. the chain didn't seem to be the problem at all... the shaft moved those 3/8 before the chain was even engauged.. so what is causing this?
Any advice is helpful thanks!!

It may be too late but the amount of play you described in your first post is perfectly normal. I wouldn't mess with the chain. Mine is the same way.
