I've located a sweet tailgate on a 79 Chero to replace the "aging" one on my 78 Chero - problem is, that its in the scrapyard with the rear window UP. I tought about trying to hook up a battery to the leads and bypass the ignition switch (no key) but theres NOTHING to hook onto in the engine compartment.
How do I get the tailgate window down so I can get the tailgate off?

crawl inside and remove the access panel. unbolt the regulator.

Take the access panel off of the tail gate and hook some wires to the window motor and then to a battery or remove the motor to get the window down.

That's the only way shy of a rock !
Un-clip the reg arms and let the window fall down.

yeah, its gonna be hot...I'll try some leads hooked to a battery before resorting to the rock solution...(although the rock method IS faster)
Thanks!!

:D
The battery wired to the motor should most definately lower that window and you'll have a spare window. Who's the guy on this list that had the tow strap beak loose and go through his back window and break the front window? :*) Ya never know when ya need a spare anything.

Use a booster pack with cables in lieu of a plain old heavy battery. The yard I go to has them on wheels to jump start vehicles in the yard, and it has nice long cables.

LOL!! I did mine when it was around 90 degrees outside and I crawled in the back, undid all the screws for the panel, then removed the regulator. All in coveralls!!
You're gonna' sweat...trust me.

Now that's a good idea...I'm gonna keep that one!

*** UPDATE ***
Thanks for all the responses....I pulled the tailgate this last weekend. fortunately, I didn't have to crawl inside to do it either. As suggested, I hooked up a battery to the hot wire leading to the tailgate, used my security torx bit to remove the keylock and (fortunately) the motor was good so the window rolled down nicely!....Now as soon as my LOWER BACK gets over being sore, I'm gonna install that sucker in my chero!!!...(**** those things are heavier than they look!!)...LOL
Thanks again guys!!! :D
