View Full Version : NP 229 - CHAIN REPLACEMENT

I believe it's time to change the chain in my NP 229 transfer case. The '84 GW has 162,000 miles and answers to my early posts on this subject suggested that I change the chain ASAP.
I checked the Haynes Manual and there is nothing about this type of work.
What's a good source of information on this chain replacement?
What's the best brand to buy and what other repairs should I make when doing this job?
Is it best to remove the case or change the chain while it's still on the truck?
I thank you in advance for your assistance!

I went to the dealer and managed to borrow the Factory Service Manual for my GW and made copies of the transfer case section(sorry, just the NP208 case). You might try that route, or find a new FSM. Good Luck

I have a repair manual put out by ATSG that I purchased for about 20.00 it does not state anything about miles or measurements as to when to change the chain. It does have pretty good diagrams and pictures to go along with the rebuild instructions. If you want it you are welcome to it for 15.00 (discounted due to grease stains etc) This is one job I will not do again!!!

definately do not attempt chain replacement with the xfer in the truck.you will lose alot of little sticks(needle bearings) when you pull the rear cse half and the output shaft and viscuous coupling fall out.
you need to remove the xfer and stand it up right with the rear yoke pointing straight up. i have a spare trany to xfer adapter that i use to disassemble xfercases. now you can remove the rear case half very carefully without anything falling out,and replace the chain without disturbing anything.remove both the yokes before you remove the case half bolts.replace the seals while youve got it out,and you can use silicone to put the case hlaves back together.

ClarkGriswald:
Thank you for the picture of the NP 229.
It's always good to know what your getting into prior to opening that case up!
Do you or anyone else have any recomendations on what supplier of chain to use or who to stay away from?
