hi people -

ive always been bothered by loud flex kinda noises coming from the roof at the rear end when i drive over bumps etc.

there is no foam lining/insulation between the headliner & the roof - is this whats contributing to the noise? ie: if i had insulation, would it stop?

or, is it something else?

or, are all fsj like this?

thanks.

btw - i found my rubber paint & will be renovating my mudflaps this weekend, so thanks for the advice, it made the serach for the right product a lot simpler ;)

Check the body mounts in the rear..they may be shot causing the flex. Mine makes loud noises up there too..but I'm pretty sure it's the spare on the roof :D

Also check the frame by the gas tank. A well known area for frame rot. If the frame has rotted through, the body will be taking up the load that the frame was supposed to.

thanks,

If the frame is rusted out, you'll see it. Its the area just ahead of the rear spring, right next to the gas tank.

Unless your Jeep been near the beach and salt most its life rot or rust, I feel is not your problem. I have similar symptoms. I am imform by forum memebers that a cross brace in the roof has broken. Evidently they're just pop rivited. Believe I broke mine carring to much on the roof rack over some rough ground. From what I'm told you have to remove the roof lining to check it out, looks simple, but haven't done mine yet.

Which part of Oz do you call home?

you can adjust the roof braces.they are held by one screw on each side and have a tendecy to slipp down over time.

from the tech lib.

To adjust the roof bows, loosen the torx screws, insert a screwdriver through the hole in the bow and push the bow up against the roof. screwdrived
