The radiator bubbles when the engine is running. Mechanic told me its exhaust leaking into the cooling system. Does that make sense ? What are the best and worst case scenarios for troublshooting and fixing this?

Thanks for the help. I am not an engine genius.

Head Gasket :( You might put a compression gauge on it.

Here's a dumbass question to followup. Is replacing the headgasket a big (expensive) deal ?

It depends, Which motor do you have, 258, 360, etc.? It also depends on what year as well to see how many vacuum lines have to be pulled and such. It all depends.

naw, head gaskets on these things are pretty strait forward...just some sweat.

It's not a big deal if you're doing it yourself.

How do you decide if you need to machine the heads? Is testing the head with a straightedge enough? Cause I have the same problem, in a ddition to a rear main leak. I was thinking about replacing the engine, but why shouldn't I fix it myself. Any expensive specialty tools needed?

Thanks,

Daniel

If/when you pull the head, you may want a machine shop take a look at it. A cracked head (water jacket) can cause the same problem. This may be the case if you are running hot. Hate to see you r&r the head and have the same problem.
