Okay driving the wag the other day it made a crazy vibration sound and feel....like driving on a road that has be grated before destruction....well anyway it went away quickly but then it did it a few times more. I spent some time this afternoon trying to duplicate the problem and it did it only once. It does not matter if my front hubs are locked or unlocked from what I can tell. It happens very inconsistant.
I am thinking a few things. Rear Wheel bearing, tcase?, or maybe even a pinion or side bearing in one of the axles housings. Pretty sure it is not the tranny...it does it when I coast in neutral. Any help with this is greatly appreciated...I will not have time to work on it till next weekend. So any ideas will help a ton. TIA

How old is the steering stabilizer, and is it damaged?

Michael..when is the last time you changed the U-joints?
I had this same symptom in my Ford truck. It did it...then went away...did it again, and then my driveshaft came off at the tranny.
Let me know if I can be of any help. I gotta work Sat. so let me know if you need a hand Sunday afternoon.

Larry the Steering stabilizer is about a year and a half old...Rancho 5000
Cole- the ujoints are all only a year old. Could be that I will have to inspect that.
I know my rear brakes are out of adjustment. I wonder if oil from the leaking axle seal of mine has made it to my shoes...and is causing them to stick and drag??? I will mess with it more this weekend. I will let you know what I find out if anything.

Porchpiggy and Slinky. That is the sound exactly. This is great I am sure we are on to something. It has to be...it is one of the only things I have not replaced! I will let you know what I find out. I really appreciate all the help.

Sure sounds (no pun intended) like the J10 I had when the rear driveshaft u-joints needed replacing. Since it's easy to get to, I'd look there first.

Jhanson. Thanks....it could be I agree. I am going to look it over this weekend. The ujoints are a year old...but that does not meant squat. Thanks again.

Sounds more like the wheel bearings (spindle bearings). Besides I happen to know the u-joints were installed by a top notch maniac.....I mean mechanic about a year ago. :D lol. Let us know what you find. smile.gif

Thanks a lot, you jinxed me. Read this post and the next day I had the same symptoms. I have the factory service manual for an 84 and it says this is most likely loose wheel bearings. Pulled mine apart yesterday and the wheel bearings had obviously taken some heat. The inner and outer lock nuts came off with just a screwdriver which is too loose. The FSM says 50lbs. of torque on the inner nut while turning the wheel to seat the bearings. Then back it off 1/8 turn. The outer nut gets at least 50lbs. I used 70lbs. on mine. My spindle bearings were fine but I changed everything any way.
Now, can anyone tell me if an '88 should have a spring in it? I assume it should as there is a spring cup but there was no spring. The funny thing is I am 99% sure my rig is going into 4 wheel drive. By the way, if you need it I think I can scan a diagram and parts list for ya.
